Alternative Beaches of Kythira

Kythira Panorama: The Hidden Paradises of the Island – Alternative Beaches Without the Crowd

Those visiting Kythira for the first time are usually enchanted by the popular sandy beach of Kapsali, the green waters of Diakofti or the imposing scenery of Kaladi. And rightly so. However, the real soul of the island is hidden where the asphalt stops, where the mobile loses its signal and the only sound is the waves and the cicadas.

As a local who has walked every inch of this place, from the steep paths to the most inaccessible coves, I suggest you leave the map of the many for a while and discover the Kythira of the few. If you are looking for absolute tranquility, authentic contact with nature and beaches where your towel will probably be the only one, here are my “secret” hideaways.

1. Limnionas: Calm in the Western Blue

Starting from the west, Limnionas is a picturesque, sheltered harbor with a few traditional “syrmata” (the small houses where fishermen keep their boats in the winter). It is located 7 km from the traditional Mylopotamos which is considered the most beautiful village of Kythira.

  • The Experience: Here, time seems to have stood still decades ago. The waters are crystal clear, shallow and almost always calm, as the bay is protected from most winds.
  • Local tip: Don’t leave early. Stay until the afternoon to enjoy one of the most atmospheric and unobstructed sunsets in the Ionian Sea, away from the hustle and bustle of the tourist spots.

2. Kalami: For Adventure Lovers

If you can handle a bit of hiking and a dose of adrenaline, Kalami will reward you with a sight you will remember forever. It is located near the village of Mylopotamos and access requires a descent down a relatively steep path (in some places there is a rope for assistance).

  • The Experience: Upon arrival, you will be greeted by a deep, narrow cove with deep, green waters, surrounded by towering cliffs. The sense of isolation here is universal.
  • Wear closed shoes for the trail and definitely bring a mask with you. The seabed here is a true underwater paradise.
  • Tip from a local: Kalami beach is suitable for those who are not afraid of heights, because the path at its final stage is on a cliff. Suitable for younger ages and for sports enthusiasts.

3. Fyri Ammos (Kalamou): The Wild Beauty of the Red Rocks

FYri Ammos Kalamou beach, Kythira

Caution: Do not confuse it with Fyri Ammos of Agia Pelagia. This beach is located on the southeastern side of the island, before the village of Kalamos, and stands out for its unique, dark reddish pebbles and deep, crystal clear waters.

  • The experience: It’s a huge beach, which means that even in the height of summer, you can find a corner to be completely alone. The landscape is wild, imposing and completely relaxing.
  • Local tip: The road leading here is a dirt road and requires a bit of care, but the beauty of the landscape makes up for any driver. Due to its size, it offers no natural shade, so your own umbrella is essential.

4. Feloti: The Hidden Gem of the South

Just before entering the town, a narrow road on the right leads us to a small, hidden beach. Feloti is a small, closed cove that few tourists know about. It is the place where locals escape when they want a quick but completely quiet swim. Please note that the road is very narrow, literally one-way. If you come across a car, it is certain that someone will have to reverse, so it is best to avoid the summer season with heavy traffic.

  • The experience: Pebbles, a few tamarisks for shade and a sea-swimming pool. There is no trace of organization here, just the authentic Kytherian nature.
  • Tip from a local: It is the ideal refuge when northern winds blow on the island, as its geographical location keeps the water “oily”.

Some Useful Tips for Explorers

The alternative beaches of Kythira offer something priceless: freedom. But to enjoy it properly, keep these three things in mind:

  1. Autonomy: On most of these beaches you will not find canteens or sunbeds. Take plenty of water, some snacks and an umbrella with you.
  2. Respect for Nature: These places remain beautiful because they are untouched. We always take the trash with us when we leave.
  3. The Wind is Your Guide: In Kythira we always say: “Look where the wind blows to choose a beach.” When the wind is north, we choose the south and west coasts. When the wind is south, we move north.

If you want to experience Kythera this year as we do all year round, leave the cosmopolitan beaches aside for a while. Follow the paths, trust your instincts and let the island reveal its best-kept secrets to you.
